Great Blue Heron Rookery in Wrentham, MA

I had the opportunity to explore the Wollomonopoag Conservation Area that is just outside of Franklin, MA and is the home to a relatively large great blue heron rookery. I have counted over 20 heron's nests and 1 osprey nest.

Heron's Nests

From the designated parking lot, the dirt trail will lead you to a large beaver pond - you can spot their activity all over the place. Once there, you will see the nests up in the tops of the dead trees in the pond. The rookery is active from March until July, when the herons and their off-springs abandon the nests.

Osprey's Nest

To get there take Rt. 140 to Elysium Street. Follow the Elysium Street to the end, you will find parking lot on your right side before the gate.

Have fun exploring!

Community Spotlight: Drama Kids of Metro West

Performance Day, Summer Camp 2013
Drama Kids is the worldwide leader in after-school drama education. Our exclusive 15 year curriculum is designed to bring out the best in every child… shy or outgoing! It is updated annually and lessons do not repeat. Each class is new and reinforces the skills we teach. Skills include: Improvisation, Speech and Movement development, Creative thinking, Teamwork and Leadership, Partner work, Small Group and Large group scene work. Drama Kids is fast paced learning and FUN, with each student performing in every class.

Our classes are broken into 4 age groups: Kinder Kids (Pre-K/K), Lower Primary (K-2nd grade), Upper Primary (3rd-6th grade) and DKI Acting Academy (7th-12th grade). During the spring session, we work on a unique and specially written play (for each age group) that will showcase the skills the students have learned throughout the year. We also offer special workshops during school vacation weeks and many Summer options. We have many classes in Franklin and neighboring communitiesDrama Kids provides a limited number of scholarships and continually works with our community partners to help in any way we can.

Register for Franklin classes, workshops or summer programs HERE.

We are a proud member of Drama Advantages; A non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that believes that ALL children should have the opportunity to participate in quality dramatic arts programs in order to develop life changing skills such as confidence, creative thinking ability, and speaking skills - skills so important for life long success.

How Public Spaces Make Cities Work

I enjoyed listening to this TED Talk, where Amanda Burden speaks about public spaces in cities and their development. Not only is she an eloquent and engaging speaker, but she accomplished some beautiful spaces in New York City.

This to me is a very relevant talk as the Town of Franklin is discussing what should happen with the space at 150 Emmons Street and many residents of Franklin came to speak to the Town Council just this past week.

More information from the Town Council meeting is available on Franklin Matters and via Franklin Downtown Partnership.  At the time of this post, meeting minutes and/or video recording was not posted on the Town's website.
